The Birds Card

Here I am to ring in the New Year with a spooky little card inspired by movie and based on the short story The Birds!

The Birds cards

While I do love the movie The Birds, to make this card I went back to the source material, the short story written by Daphne Du Maurier. The story focuses on a family in England that is inexplicably being terrorized by birds. What I was hoping to capture was a feeling of being isolated by the sea. I found some great images from the The Graphics Fairy and I used this lovely one of the windswept seashore.

Detail of bird and branch stamp and transferred image

I decided to use Omni-Gel to transfer the image, which creates a plastic-y film with the image on it. It was so clear that I had to put a piece of velum under it. But together they created a lovely bleak grey feel to the card.

Detail of bird cut outs and large bird stamp

The one thing I really needed for this card was the birds! I pulled out my own bird stamps (the big one was one of those cheap $1 bin stamps from Michael’s, I love it!) and also got a file of birds to cut out so I had so many tiny birds to put on my card!

Mica flakes

Even with all the birds I need a bit more foreground to complete the card so I added some mica flakes along the shore part of the image.

Inside of card, birds on a wire and typed background paper

And since it was based on a story, I had to type up bits to use as background paper! This time I typed directly onto velum which worked great. My typewriter likes the workout I give it around Halloween. And of course I needed to add some birds on a wire as a nod to the movie.

Finished The Birds card

Spooky birds! It’s a bit late for Halloween wishes, but beware the East wind and birds!
