Bats and Spiderweb Card

The holiday season is upon us! I have been doing a lot of bookbinding lately but I had to set it aside and start making some cards for Halloween! Using some free paper and my typewriter, I went to work.

Bats and Spiderweb cards

A friend of mine gave me some squares of black paper, measuring about 9″x9″. There is nothing special about it, but it gave me the idea to make long skinny cards for Halloween. I had also wanted to feature a spiderweb so I tried to put the two ideas together!

I found this long skinny spiderweb image (I think it was from someone’s pinterest page,) and I created a vector file from it. I was then able to use my Silhouette machine and my Foil Quill to foil it onto my cards with a matte silver foil.

As you can see, I ended up being heavily influenced by this image; the fact that I have die cutters and some stamps that look very similar to the flowers in the picture helped a lot. But they also went with the long and skinny aspect of the card.

Detail of bats

Early on I had thought of adding bats to the card and I had an image from the Silhouette store and with a few modifications I had some bats! I colored some velum with some glitter sprays (even with some ironing, they still were a bit wrinkly) and cut the bats out with my machine. Some silver around the edges made them gleam in the moonlight.

I also cut some small bats using a punch and shimmery paper. To make the moon I just cut a circle out of some scrap cardstock and used it as a stencil with some white stamping ink. If you couldn’t tell, I coated almost everything on this card with glitter spray! I managed to use only supplies that I had on hand to make this card and the sprays helped make that possible.

Now for the typewriter! I had purchased some silver typewriter ribbon very randomly when WeR Memory Keepers came out with their, now discontinued, typewriter. Finally with this dark paper I could use the ribbon! With some futzing with the spools I put it my big old manual typewriter from the 1950’s. But what to type? I found in my collection a poem by Edgar A. Poe called Ulalame that seemed to fit the somber mood of my card and I typed in on the entire inside of the card before I did anything to the front.

I had to add one more bat to the inside along with a Halloween stamp that I embossed with some black and gold mixed embossing powder.

I am very happy with this card! It makes a nice contrast to last year’s rather scary Jekyll and Hyde card but is still very moody and spooky.

Happy Halloween!
