Train Father’s Day Card

[Father’s day is coming up! This is the card I made for my Dad three years ago using an amazing photo of trains. Enjoy! Originally published 8/29/18]

For Mother’s and Father’s Day I really like to showcase my parent’s interests so I made my Dad a train card, with some vintage photos and gears!

I found this amazing picture of a railroad shop from the 1940’s from the Library of Congress, a great resource but not the easiest website to navigate and search, mostly because they have so much stuff! But it is definitely worth the search.

The card was made of some two-sided cardstock, both sides are aged nicely and the train transfer on the front of the card looked so good on it.

I also tried some different transfer techniques. I keep wanting my printable decal paper to work, but it is almost always a dismal failure, the only one that I could get to work was the railroad sign. I also tried a new technique, waxed paper transfer where you print on waxed paper and then press it onto your surface. I did not use waxed paper but the paper left over from a sheet of labels.  I think anything slick that the ink doesn’t absorb into will work. I used it for the tunnel image and the black and white train on the front of the card. It gave the images a very interesting quality which I think worked out well.

I added the gears and the number plate (thank you Tim Holtz) and I used some metallic wax around the picture. On top of everything I added a bookbinding touch by sewing in the inner paper with some hemp twine. So there you have it, an old timey train card!
