Dad’s can be a bit tricky to make cards for, but I have some regular themes that I use. One my themes that I often use for my dad is boats and this year I mixed it up a bit by doing a lighthouse card (and sneaked a boat in there too.)

At first I was going to use the whole image, but then I thought it would be fun to add some more layers, like I do. I found another nautical image in my digital stash and printed it out on vellum for some translucency. That was good, but I couldn’t resist spraying it down with some glitter spray!

I didn’t let the ink dry enough before I sprayed it so the image got a bit blurred, but I liked how it turned out, it really made it feel like it was more in the distance. The image I was using then would have covered all this up! So I went ahead and cut up the lighthouse image.

This time I cut everything out by hand. Even the chipboard that I used to pop out the lighthouse (if you look carefully, you can see a bit of the chipboard sticking out of the side of the lighthouse, oops!) I like this picture since you can really see the glitter spray on the boat image. The next challenge was the bird stamp. I couldn’t decide on how I wanted it to look, so I stamped and embossed a whole bunch of them!

It was fun playing with my chunky embossing powders and finding that some of them are too chunky. I also like to do my own mixing of embossing powders just to see what happens. After trying these out, I liked the ivory bird on the kraft paper. The embossing powder had a good subtle mix in it, the glittery ones (even though I love glitter!) didn’t work on this card.

The bird flying by!
For the inside of the card I went for a map theme. I used some fun stamps and printed out some map paper for the accent paper. The map paper got some ink and glitter spray fun added to it as well.

I liked the relative simplicity (for me) of this card. The images worked really well together and didn’t need a lot of other stuff to make it work. And my dad liked it too!
