I finally got my book bound! My mother is a big Jane Austen fan so I bound Sense and Sensibility for her.

This was quite the long journey. Last year I got my hands on a copy of Sense and Sensibility from this company, Volcano Arts. They have lots of bookbinding supplies as well as printed books that are ready to be bound!
It is definitely more fun to bind printed material than just blank books and I wanted to make this a classy book for my mom.

One thing that was exciting about binding this book was that I got a new tool. A friend of mine was able to make me a sewing frame. It is pretty basic but is does the job. I am still getting used to using it, but it is way better than having the tapes flop all over the place.

And as always the book in a press! I’m pretty sure that half (or more) of bookbinding is pressing stuff. I tried to get a better rounding on the spine this time, I did go a bit overboard this time, but I think it was better than being too flat.

I was also happy to be able to use the Foil Quill tool in my Silhouette machine to foil the spine and the recessed “S” on the cover. The fabric was a little tricky, I had to seal it to get a good impression. It isn’t as good as what you see on purchased books, but I was still pleased with the results. To recess the “S” monogram square I had to cut and dig out some of the board before I covered it with paper and then just glued the square in.

I had fun picking the paper for this book. I got the cover paper was first and I thought the blue book cloth was super nice with it. Luckily I had the perfect scrap of cardstock for the monogram square and it showed off the foil nicely.

I had some issues with the endpapers, but it allowed me to use this nice paper on the inside covers instead! I had a mix of silver and gold on the front of the book so it was good to have some silver on the inside.

It took a while to finish it but I think it turned out great and I can’t wait to use some of the new tools again to make another! Pride and Prejudice maybe?

This looks like such a neat process — and it turned out beautifully!
