When I was thinking of making this birthday card I ran across this card idea from Impress Cards and Crafts with a small terrarium on it. With cactus and terrariums being trendy right now I thought I would go for it!

I took the original idea a bit further, I wanted a bigger and more elaborate card. I had picked up some cactus stamps which were just the right size for a 5″x7″ card and used them to determine the size of the terrarium. I got out my Silhouette and started cutting.

I cut the frame out of some gold paper, a piece of acetate for the glass and a piece of velum to fuzz the back of it a bit. I designed the terrarium shape myself. Using my PixScan mat on the Silhouette I cut out the stamps. I hadn’t done that in awhile so I thought-what the heck! As usual it mostly worked, I cut out way more than I needed so I could discard any that cut out super weird and I had some to experiment with. I wanted some color to the plants so I used markers to liven them up.

Early on I had decided on the background paper so I used that color palette for the cacti, which made them a bit more fun looking. After sticking everything on I felt it needed something more, some sort of sentiment, and I found the “just for you” stamp in my stash. I did pull out my other die cutting machine to make the placard, so easy to make something nice!

I liked the stamp on the front so much I wanted to do something similar on the inside. I have been trying out this modern lettering/calligraphy lately so I hand lettered the “happy birthday.”

It was fun to make a more elaborate card after having to make some super quick ones!
